Capecitabine’s mechanism of actioXeltabine medicine 500mg Capecitabine treats rectal cancer rectaln
The active ingredient capecitabine is a non-cytotoxic fluoropyrimidine carbamate that functions as an oral prodrug of the cytotoxic 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) class. Capecitabine is activated through several enzymatic steps.
The enzyme involved in the final conversion to 5-FU, thymidine phosphorylase (ThyPase), is found in tumor tissues, but also in normal tissues, although usually at lower levels.
In human cancer xenograft models, capecitabine has demonstrated synergistic effects when combined with docetaxel, possibly related to the upregulation of thymidine phosphorylase by docetaxel.
