What is Keppra?
Keppra is an anti-epileptic drug used as adjuvant therapy in adult patients with epilepsy whose current treatments are not effective in controlling partial seizures.
Partial epilepsy is the most common type of epilepsy in adults that can be characterized by poor consciousness, loss of consciousness, involuntary motor behavior. For doctors and patients, the appeal of Keppra is that it increases the ability to control seizures without adverse interactions with the combined antiepileptic drug.

Mechanism of action levetiracetam
Levetiracetam is an anti-epileptic drug due to excessive electrical activity in the brain.
How levetiracetam works is unclear, but it seems to interfere with a protein called synaptic vesicle protein, found in the space between nerves and is involved in the release of chemical messengers from Neurons stabilize electrical activity in the brain and prevent seizures.
Dosage of Keppra 500mg medicine
- Monotherapy: Adults & adolescents from the age of 16 years: starting 250 mg twice daily & increasing to 500 mg twice daily after 2 weeks, may further increase by 250 mg twice daily daily 2 weeks, depending on response, up to 1500 mg twice daily.
- Combination treatment: Adults (≥ 18 years) & adolescents (12-17 years) weighing ≥ 50 kg: starting 500 mg twice daily, depending on response & tolerance may increase to 1500 mg x 2 times / day. Adjust dose to 500 mg twice daily for 2 to 4 weeks.
- Elderly ≥ 65 years: dose adjustment according to renal function. Children 4-11t. & adolescents (12-17t) weighing <50kg: initially 10 mg / kg twice daily, depending on response & tolerance may increase to 30 mg twice daily. Adjust dose to increase or decrease to not more than 10 mg twice daily for 2 weeks.
Adjust the dose
- Children ≥ 50kg: same adult dose.
- Infants & children <4 years: not recommended.
- Renal impairment: dose adjustment with ClCr Mild to moderate hepatic impairment: no dose adjustment is necessary.
- Severe hepatic impairment: halve daily maintenance dose when ClCr <70mL / min.
How to use Keppra
- Take liquid medicine and oral tablets as directed by your doctor.
- Take twice daily with or without food. Crushing or chewing the tablet can cause a bitter taste.
- Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day.
- Do not stop taking this medication without consulting a doctor. Your seizure may get worse when the medication suddenly stops. Your dose should be reduced gradually.
Be cautious before using Keppra
You should not use Keppra if you are allergic to levetiracetam.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- Kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis);
