What is Imatinib?
Imatinib is a medicine containing an active substance called imatinib. This drug works by inhibiting the growth of abnormal cells in leukemia, blood disorders and cancer.
Indications for treatment Glivec 100mg
Adults and children
- Patients newly diagnosed adults and children with chronic myeloid leukemia Philadelphia chromosome (Ph + CML) in the chronic phase
- Patients with Ph + CML during blast crisis (BC), accelerated phase (AP) or in chronic phase (CP) after failure of interferon-alpha therapy
- Adult patients with acute or recurrent lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph + ALL)
- Children diagnosed with acute newly diagnosed Philadelphia lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph + ALL) in combination with chemotherapy
Adults
- Adult patients with myelodysplastic / myeloproliferative disease (MDS / MPD) related to rearrangement of platelet-derived growth factor receptor gene (PDGFR) were identified by FDA-approved assays.
- Adult patients with active systemic mastocytosis (ASM) without the c-KIT D816V mutation as determined with an FDA-approved test or unknown c-KIT mutation
- Adult patients with hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) or chronic eosinophilic leukemia (CEL) with fusion kinase FIP1L1-PDGFRα and for patients with HES or CEL are FIP1L1-PDGFR
- Adult patients with unresectable, recurrent or metastatic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP)
- Patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors due to KIT (CD117) who cannot be operated on or have spread to other parts of the body
- Adult postoperative patient removed GIST assumed KIT (CD117)
Mechanism of action Imatinib
- The active ingredient in Imatinib is imatinib, a protein-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI). This means it blocks certain specific enzymes called tyrosine kinases.
- These enzymes can be found in several receptors on the surface of cancer cells including those involved in stimulating uncontrolled cell division.
- By blocking these receptors Glivec helps control cell division.
How to use Imatinib
Your doctor has prescribed Glivec because you have a serious illness. Imatinib can help you against this condition.

Dosage of Imatinib
The recommended dose in adults
Your doctor will tell you exactly how many capsules of Imatinib to take.
Treatment for CML:
Depending on your condition, the usual starting dose is 400 mg or 600 mg:
- 400 mg to be taken once daily,
- 600 mg is used as one tablet of 400 mg plus 2 capsules of 100 mg once daily.
Treatment for GIST:
- The starting dose is 400 mg, to be taken as one tablet once a day.
For CML and GIST, your doctor may prescribe higher or lower doses depending on how you respond to treatment. If your daily dose is 800 mg (2 capsules), you should take one pill in the morning and the second in the evening.
Treatment for ALL positive Ph:
- The starting dose is 600 mg to be taken as one 400 mg tablet plus 2 100 mg tablets once a day.
Treatment for MDS / MPD:
- The starting dose is 400mg to be taken as one tablet once a day.
Treatment for HES / CEL:
- The starting dose is 100 mg, to be taken as a 100 mg tablet once a day. Your doctor may decide to increase the dose to 400 mg, 400 mg each time, depending on how you respond to treatment.
Treatment for DFSP:
- Doses of 800mg daily (2 capsules), taken as one tablet in the morning and the second tablet in the evening.
The recommended dose in children and adolescents
- The doctor will tell you how many capsules of Imatinib to give your child. The amount of Imatinib given will depend on your child’s condition, body weight and height.
- The total daily dose in children should not exceed 800 mg with CML and 600 mg with Ph ALL. The treatment may be given to your child as a dose once daily or alternatively the daily dose can be divided into two shots.
Instructions for use of Imatinib 100mg
- Take Imatinib with a meal. This will help protect you from stomach problems when taking Imatinib.
- Swallow whole tablets with a large glass of water.
If you cannot swallow tablets, you can dissolve them in a glass of water or apple juice:
- Use about 200 ml per 400 mg tablet.
- Stir with a spoon until the tablet is completely dissolved.
