What is Drotaverin ?
Drotaverin medicine contains the active ingredient Drotaverine, which is an antispasmodic medicine used to increase dilation of the cervix during childbirth.
It is structurally related to papaverine, is a selective phosphodiesterase inhibitor and has no anticholinergic effects. The drug is most commonly used in the treatment of dysmenorrhea, abdominal pain, pain caused by kidney stones.

How does Drotaverin work?
Drug has antispasmodic effects mediated by phosphodiesterase-IV inhibition, specific to smooth muscle. It has a rapid and direct effect on smooth muscle. It works to correct the cyclic AMP and Ca imbalance at the site of spasticity, thereby reducing pain and smooth muscle spasms.
Indications for drug use
Drotaverin medicine is used for the treatment, control, prevention and improvement of the following diseases, conditions, symptoms:
- Irritable bowel syndrome;
- Cervical contractions during labor;
- Chest pain;
- Painful gallstones in the kidney;
- Renal colic.
Drotaverin may also be used for purposes not mentioned above.
Contraindications to the use of the drug
Do not administer to patients with a history of allergy to the active ingredient or to any of the other ingredients in drug.
Dosage of Drotaverin
Use Drotaverin at the dose and duration recommended by your doctor.
- The recommended adult dose is usually: 40-80mg, taken 2-3 times a day depending on the severity of your condition.
- In children up to 6 years of age, the recommended dose is: 20mg, administered 2-3 times a day. The dose may be increased up to 40mg in children over 6 years of age.
How to take Drotaverin
Take medicinee as directed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts than recommended.
Swallow the tablet whole with plenty of water without crushing or chewing.
Tablets are generally well absorbed when taken orally, and can be taken before or after meals. In patients with upset stomach or stomach pain, drug should be taken after meals to prevent adverse effects on the stomach.
